How to Ask Customers for Google Reviews (Without Feeling Awkward)
Here's the uncomfortable truth about Google reviews: happy customers almost never leave one unprompted. Not because they don't care — because they're busy, and by the time they're home the moment has passed. Businesses with lots of reviews aren't luckier than you. They just ask, every time. Here's how to do it well.
When to ask
Ask at the peak of goodwill — the same day as the job, ideally within a couple of hours of finishing. A plumber who fixed the boiler at 2pm should be in the customer's messages by teatime. Wait a week and your response rate falls off a cliff.
How to ask: text beats everything
A short, personal SMS outperforms email, follow-up cards and "please review us" footers by miles, because it lands where people actually look, and the link is one tap away. Scripts you can steal:
The standard ask
"Hi Sarah, thanks for choosing Bright Spark Electrical today! If you were happy with the job, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It takes 30 seconds and really helps a small business like ours: [your review link]"
The personal touch
"Hi John, it was great sorting your bathroom this week. If you're pleased with how it turned out, a quick Google review would mean a lot — here's the direct link: [your review link]"
The one polite reminder
"Hi Sarah, just a gentle nudge — if you've got 30 seconds, we'd really appreciate that Google review: [your review link]. No worries if not!"
One reminder, a few days later, roughly doubles your response rate. More than one and you're a nuisance — stop there.
What NOT to do (Google's rules matter)
- Don't pay or incentivise. Discounts, freebies or raffle entries for reviews break Google's policy and can get reviews removed — or your profile penalised.
- Don't "review gate". That's asking only customers you know are happy, or filtering out unhappy ones before they reach Google. Invite everyone the same way.
- Don't write them yourself. Fake reviews are the fastest way to lose the profile you're trying to build.
Make it automatic
Every script above works — the hard part is remembering to send it after every single job, forever. That consistency is exactly what we automate: add a customer's name and number, and Five-Stars Reviews sends the friendly request and the one polite reminder for you.
